All summer long up and down this great county of Yorkshire, farmers, children, and its good gentle country folk will be making plans, jam, grooming, arranging and practising for their local agricultural show exhibitions.
The pinnacle of the Yorkshire Agricultural Shows is of course The Great Yorkshire held in Harrogate over 3 days in mid July. The North York Moors has its very own rich and proud history in Agricultural shows and none more highly regarded than our very own local Danby Show now in it’s 157th year. The show takes place in a magnificent setting in pretty Danby Dale at the heart of the North York Moors National Park.
Every 3rd Wednesday in August there is magic in the air on show day in Danby. We wake up in the dale to a buzz of excitement with the sound of loud speakers crackling into action. Ponies, sheep and cattle are being washed and brushed and brought to the edge of glamour. Pigeons, rabbits and ferrets buffed up and sparkling are brought in by owners ranging in ages from 4 to 94 for some serious judging that takes place in huge striped marquees that have taken over the Vicarage fields. Breads, cakes and scones are being taken out of the ovens up and down dale, some will be exhibits, some for the glorious tea tent that is chock full of homely delights.
Will the weather be kind? Ice creams or a wellie day? Rosettes, silver ware and certificates of merit are ready and waiting to be won and claimed by the victorious.
By one o’clock the field can be packed with upward of 6000 people, kiddies in Jodphurs,
Mums, Dads, farmers and their dogs all enjoying Punch and Judy, the local ukulele band, vintage machinery, pony games, show jumping, sheep shearing, bouncy castle, stalls selling local cheeses, herbs, honey and handicrafts. Candy floss, the beer tent and amazing W.I. run lunch and tea tent sustains us all to the end of another lovely Yorkshire day.
