A fish and chip trip to our nearby pretty Yorkshire seaside village of Sandsend, just along the beach from Whitby, turned into a delightful gastronomic day out.
Firstly our stroll along the fossil rich beach at Sandsend worked up a jolly good appetite – perfect, as the Fish Cottage Restaurant absolutely did the trick. Located in a pretty whitewashed and blue painted fisherman’s cottage this charming restaurant is set back from the old stone bridge over a stream which is just a handy stones throw from the child friendly beach. The Fish Cottage restaurant has lots of attractive out door seating with colourful umbrellas and festoon lights, It sports a fun Alfresco bar and it’s dog friendly too.
we had a table booked inside this trendy, clean lined restaurant, the staff were immediately welcoming and smilie. And here is an important detail – it smelt deliciously of warm butter & freshfishiness! I knew we were in for a treat.
To get us in the mood – as if we needed to – and helped along with a juicy Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc we shared half a dozen natural oysters, so good to share!
When it came to choosing our main course Danny opted for the famous scrumptious Fish Taco’s. I plumped for one of their daily landed seasonal fish and what a choice! Halibut, Whole Sea Bream, Monkfish, Tuna, Crab, Lemon Sole, Fresh Local Lobster. It was the lobster for me, luxurious, firm, sweet and succulent cooked in garlic and parsley butter, heavenly, there are other fabulous tasty butters to choose from too, and the chips were pure crunchy happiness:)
And here’s a little add on…. On a table near us a group of 6 young men on a walking retreat had preordered a whole sea trout for sharing – it was enormous! I asked permission to take a photograph, they tried to persuade us to take some home …. They’re a friendly bunch along the Yorkshire coast . Why not come and stay in luxury at Crag House Farm (Book online) you could explore and discover so much that this amazing county has to offer. We’d love to see you.
